Monsoon Weather Effects in Yeppoon

February 15, 2008

I made this video on the 12.Feb 2008 after the heavy rainfalls of the monsoon had cleared up for the first time. Until then it had rained for nearly 48 hours straight. Where we drive is actually on the wrong side of the road since the other (flooded side) was closed.

Luckily enough the road is double lined so traffic was still able to flow past the gap. This drive is on Farnborough Road heading toward Byfield along the beachfront in Yeppoon.

Yeppoon - Queensland Weather Wrecking Havoc!

January 17, 2008

The end of the drought is finally here - or so it seems. It is a wonder that we are not travelling around with paddle boats right now after all the recent rain we’ve had. January is a contender for one of the wettest month on record. Especially if it keeps pouring like this. So far we’ve had a whopping 88.2 mm of rain this month in Yeppoon.

Other places in Queensland are even worse off since they are well and truly flooded right now. Townsville is cut off and hundreds of trucks are stuck en route north or south. Charters Towers and Harvey Bay also got a flogging and the weather forecast is still reporting heavy thunderstorms (due to a massive tropical low) and heavy showers all around the state.

Queensland Weather on Video:

I suppose we can’t complain here in Yeppoon since we have been exempt from flooding so far (touch wood). And for all we know, the local farmers love the rain since it was much needed.

Despite the need for water reserves to be refilled throughout the state, there is a serious side to it. Some parts of northern Queensland have been declared a disaster zone, with Townsville receiving 260 mm of rain within 48 hours. In Airlie Beach 30 kg heavy beds have been washed across the street from a wave of rushing water down the hill onto main street.
